What are the primary types of high-speed Internet access?

The most common methods for providing broadband Internet access are via coaxial cable (TV cable) and ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line). Less widely used methods are via satellite, wireless networks and by using variations of DSL such as SDSL (symmetrical DSL), HDSL (High bit-rate DSL) and VDSL (Very High Data Rate DSL).

What is ADSL?

ADSL or Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line is the technology that has been developed for enabling broadband connections using existing telephone networks. The telephone exchange must be able to supports this technology and the subscriber must use an ADSL modem to connect to the Internet via a standard telephone line.

What is high-speed cable Internet service?

Cable Internet service uses the same coaxial cable that is used for television to provide high-speed Internet access. The cable company must be set up to deliver this service and the subscriber must have a special cable modem to connect the computer to the cable outlet.

What is satellite Internet service?

There are two types of satellite services – one that provides two-way service that transfers data in both directions. This method, however, is very expensive. A cheaper option is a one-way service that is comparable to cable or ADSL in terms of monthly charges but uses a dial-up connection to upload content. High-speed Internet access via satellite is available world-wide. It is of particular interest to people in remote locations where ADSL and cable options are unavailable.

What is wireless Internet service?

A high-speed connection to the Internet can be established using wireless technology. A receiver on the outside of the house sends the signals to connection points inside your home. These in turn send the data through to your computer.
